How it works

RF Heat + IPL + Expression — All in One Visit

We use two medical-grade devices — the same technology we use for dry eye disease — in a targeted same-session protocol designed to resolve styes and chalazia quickly. You can be evaluated and treated in your first visit.

Step 1

Forma-I RF Heat

Controlled radiofrequency energy warms the blocked gland deep from within — far more effectively than a home compress. This softens the hardened material inside so it can actually be cleared.

Step 2

Lumecca-I IPL

Intense pulsed light targets the inflamed blood vessels feeding the lesion, kills Demodex mites that cause recurring styes, and stimulates tissue healing — breaking the cycle that keeps styes coming back.

Step 3

Professional Expression

After the gland contents are softened and inflammation is reduced, Dr. Lipe performs professional manual expression — clearing the blocked gland in a way that simply isn't possible at home.

Why It's Different

Why Hot Compresses and Antibiotics Often Aren't Enough

The standard approach works for mild cases — but it has real limits that leave a lot of patients stuck.

Antibiotics don't help chalazia — they're inflammatory, not infectious

Home heat rarely softens a hardened, blocked gland enough to clear it

Many chalazia never fully resolve without professional in-office treatment

Demodex mites in eyelid follicles are a leading cause of recurring styes — and most patients don't know they have them

Underlying rosacea drives stye recurrence in many patients — IPL treats that root cause directly

The longer a chalazion goes untreated, the more likely it is to need a steroid injection or surgical incision

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a stye and a chalazion?

A stye (hordeolum) is an acute infection of a gland along your eyelid — it comes on fast, is often painful, and typically looks like a red swollen bump near the lash line. A chalazion is what happens when a stye doesn't fully clear: the gland gets blocked, the contents harden, and you're left with a firm lump that can persist for months. Both respond well to our in-office treatment protocol.

Do I need an appointment or can I walk in?

We strongly recommend calling us as soon as it happens — (615) 249-4926. We offer same-day appointments for stye and chalazion cases and will do everything we can to get you in quickly. The sooner treatment starts, the faster resolution happens.

How many treatment sessions does it take?

The full protocol typically requires 1-3 sessions spaced just 3–4 days apart. That tight spacing means you're seeing real progress fast — not waiting weeks between appointments. Many patients notice meaningful improvement after the first session.

Is the IPL treatment safe?

Yes. Lumecca-I IPL is appropriate for patients with skin types Fitzpatrick I–IV. Protective eye shields are used during every IPL session. Patients with skin types Fitzpatrick V–VI receive the RF heat and expression protocol only — which is still highly effective. Dr. Lipe will assess your skin type at your first visit and select the right approach for you.

Does insurance cover stye treatment?

While we accept major medical insurance plans including BCBS, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Aetna, Medicare, and others. Coverage for stye and chalazion treatment varies by plan and this procedure is not covered by major medical plans. Call us at (615) 249-4926 to discuss pricing before your visit.

Why do some people keep getting styes?

Recurring styes are almost always caused by an underlying condition — most commonly Demodex mite infestation in the eyelid follicles, or an inflammatory skin condition like rosacea (even undiagnosed). Our protocol directly addresses both of these root causes, which is why it's so effective at preventing recurrence, not just treating individual styes.

Don't Wait This Out

The sooner a stye or chalazion is treated, the faster it resolves — and the less likely you are to need more invasive care down the road. Call us or book online and we'll get you in today.
