Services/Glaucoma Management
Glaucoma can steal your vision without warning. Dr. Nathan Lipe uses advanced diagnostics — including OCT imaging and visual field testing — to catch glaucoma early and manage it before permanent damage occurs.
Book an AppointmentGlaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve — the critical link between your eye and your brain. Most forms are caused by elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), though some people develop glaucoma even at normal pressures.
It is sometimes called the "silent thief of sight" because vision loss begins at the periphery and progresses with no pain or noticeable symptoms. By the time most patients notice a change in their vision, significant and irreversible damage has already occurred.
Annual comprehensive eye exams at Elite Eyecare include glaucoma screening. Early detection is the most powerful tool available for preserving long-term vision.
When you come in for an eye exam, Dr. Lipe uses a layered approach to detect glaucoma at the earliest possible stage — before you notice any change in your vision.
We measure your intraocular pressure using a non-contact tonometer. Elevated IOP is the most common risk factor for glaucoma, and tracking it over time reveals meaningful trends.
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) produces detailed cross-sectional images of the optic nerve fiber layer, allowing Dr. Lipe to detect structural thinning before vision loss begins.
Automated visual field testing maps your peripheral and central vision. Characteristic patterns of field loss can indicate glaucomatous damage and track whether it is progressing.
With a dilated pupil, Dr. Lipe directly evaluates the optic nerve head for cupping, pallor, and other structural changes associated with glaucoma damage.
Glaucoma cannot be reversed, but its progression can be halted. Dr. Lipe builds a personalized plan based on the type, stage, and your individual health profile.
First-line treatment for most patients. Prescription drops lower intraocular pressure by either reducing fluid production or improving drainage from the eye. There are multiple classes available, and Dr. Lipe will choose the best fit for your situation.
When eye drops alone are not sufficient to control IOP, oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitors may be added. These further reduce fluid production and are typically used short-term or as a bridge to other therapies.
Glaucoma requires lifelong management. Dr. Lipe schedules follow-up visits every 3–6 months to check pressure, review your medication effectiveness, and repeat imaging as needed to detect any progression early.
When medications cannot adequately control glaucoma, Dr. Lipe provides referrals to trusted ophthalmology specialists in Nashville for laser therapy (SLT) or surgical options. We coordinate your care so nothing falls through the cracks.
One of the biggest challenges in glaucoma management is consistent medication use. Dr. Lipe takes time to explain how your drops work, when to use them, and what to do if you miss a dose — helping you stay on track between visits.
Patients with ocular hypertension or a strong family history who haven't yet developed glaucoma receive more frequent monitoring visits. Catching the transition from "suspect" to confirmed glaucoma early makes treatment far more effective.
Patients consistently highlight Dr. Lipe's thoroughness, clear explanations, and unhurried approach — qualities that matter especially for a chronic condition like glaucoma.
OCT imaging, automated visual fields, and digital tonometry give Dr. Lipe a complete picture of your optic nerve health — not just a single pressure reading.
Dr. Lipe creates individualized treatment and monitoring schedules based on your specific type and stage of glaucoma — no one-size-fits-all protocols.

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, usually caused by elevated intraocular pressure. It is called the silent thief of sight because it typically causes no pain and no noticeable vision changes in its early stages — by the time most people notice symptoms, permanent damage has already occurred. Regular eye exams are the only reliable way to catch it early.
Dr. Lipe uses a multi-step approach including tonometry to measure intraocular pressure (IOP), optical coherence tomography (OCT) to image the optic nerve fiber layer, visual field testing to map any peripheral vision loss, and optic nerve evaluation during a dilated exam. These tools together allow for early detection before vision loss occurs.
Glaucoma cannot be reversed — vision loss from glaucoma is permanent. However, with early detection and consistent management, progression can be significantly slowed or halted. The goal of glaucoma management at Elite Eyecare is to preserve the vision you have through regular monitoring and appropriate treatment.
Dr. Lipe manages glaucoma primarily through prescription eye drops that reduce intraocular pressure, along with oral medications when necessary. For patients who need laser therapy or surgical intervention, Dr. Lipe provides referrals to trusted ophthalmology specialists. All treatment plans are personalized based on the type and stage of glaucoma.
Most glaucoma patients are seen every 3–6 months depending on the severity of their condition and whether their pressure is well controlled. During each visit, Dr. Lipe checks intraocular pressure, reviews your medications, and may repeat visual field or OCT testing to track any changes. The frequency is adjusted based on how stable your condition is.
Risk factors for glaucoma include being over age 60, having a family history of glaucoma, elevated eye pressure, African or Hispanic ancestry, diabetes, high blood pressure, previous eye injuries, and long-term use of corticosteroid medications. If you have one or more of these risk factors, Dr. Lipe recommends annual comprehensive eye exams that include glaucoma screening.
