What Is a Contact Lens Exam?

A contact lens exam goes beyond your standard eye exam. In addition to checking your vision and eye health, Dr. Lipe takes precise measurements of your corneal curvature and evaluates how lenses fit on your specific eyes.

A separate contact lens prescription is required by law — it includes parameters like base curve and diameter that glasses prescriptions don't have. Whether you're a first-time wearer or switching lens types, the exam ensures your lenses are safe, comfortable, and giving you the clearest possible vision.

You may need a contact lens exam if you:

  • Want to start wearing contactsFirst-time wearers need a fitting and training before getting a prescription.
  • Have an expired contact lens RxContact prescriptions expire annually — you need a current exam to reorder.
  • Experience discomfort or drynessLens brand, material, or modality may need to change.
  • Have astigmatism or presbyopiaToric or multifocal lenses require a specialized fitting.
  • Your vision has changedAn updated prescription means an updated contact lens Rx too.
Our Process

How Dr. Lipe Conducts Contact Lens Exams

Every contact lens exam at Elite Eyecare follows a thorough, patient-centered process — so you leave with lenses that genuinely fit and a prescription you can rely on.

1

Comprehensive Eye Exam

We start with a full eye health evaluation — visual acuity, refraction, eye pressure, and a retinal health assessment — before moving to the contact lens portion.

2

Corneal Measurements

Dr. Lipe measures the curvature and diameter of your cornea to identify the lens parameters that will fit your eyes safely and comfortably.

3

Trial Lens Fitting

You'll try on a trial lens during your visit. Dr. Lipe evaluates the fit, centration, and movement — and checks your vision through the lens before finalizing the prescription.

4

Training & Follow-Up

First-time wearers receive hands-on insertion and removal training. We schedule a follow-up to confirm your prescription is performing as expected before issuing your final Rx.

Lens Types We Fit

Contact Lens Options at Elite Eyecare

Dr. Lipe fits a wide range of contact lenses from leading brands including Alcon, CooperVision, Johnson & Johnson, and Bausch + Lomb.

Daily Disposable Lenses

The healthiest modality for most patients — fresh, sterile lenses every day with no cleaning required. Ideal for part-time wear, allergy sufferers, and first-time wearers.

Monthly & Bi-Weekly Lenses

Reusable lenses that offer a cost-effective option for daily full-time wear. Dr. Lipe will recommend the best replacement schedule for your tear film and lifestyle.

Toric Lenses for Astigmatism

Specially designed to correct astigmatism with stable, sharp vision throughout the day. Available in daily, bi-weekly, and monthly modalities from all major brands.

Multifocal Lenses

Designed for presbyopia — age-related near vision blur. Multifocal lenses let you see clearly at multiple distances without reading glasses.

Lenses for Dry Eyes

High-water-content and silicone hydrogel lenses allow more oxygen to reach the cornea and help combat contact lens-related dryness and discomfort.

Colored Contact Lenses

Prescription-based cosmetic lenses that change or enhance your eye color. A proper fitting is still required — colored lenses are not one-size-fits-all.

Common Questions

Contact Lens Exam FAQs

Yes. A contact lens exam is separate from a standard comprehensive eye exam. It includes additional measurements and a fitting evaluation to make sure the lenses fit your eyes safely and comfortably. You'll need a current contact lens prescription before ordering any lenses.
Absolutely. We fit toric contact lenses from all major brands specifically designed for astigmatism — in daily and monthly options. Dr. Lipe will evaluate which lens design gives you the clearest, most stable vision.
Yes — we fit first-time wearers all the time. Dr. Lipe will walk you through everything: proper insertion and removal technique, wearing schedules, and lens care. We make sure you leave confident and comfortable.
No. A glasses prescription and a contact lens prescription are not interchangeable. Contact lens prescriptions include additional parameters — base curve and diameter — that are specific to how a lens sits on your eye. A contact lens exam is required.
Most vision insurance plans include a contact lens exam benefit. We accept VSP, EyeMed, Davis Vision, Spectera, and Superior. Your allowance may also apply toward lens purchases. Call us at (615) 249-4926 and we'll verify your benefits before your visit.
Plan for about 60–75 minutes for a combined comprehensive and contact lens exam. If you're a new contact lens wearer, we'll spend extra time on the fitting and insertion/removal training. Follow-up visits to confirm your final lens prescription are typically shorter.
